Dexter|A really well done, first in-depth, look at this important 19th C southern stoneware pottery in South Carolina. Excellent photos and well researched. Good examples of some of the forms made there as well as various handles, rims and lips. Examples of alkaline glazes are plentiful and clearly show this uniquely southern method
38AK172 is known as the Hitchcock Woods Pottery. It is located in Aiken, SC and was the site of an alkaline glazed stoneware pottery kiln. In 2015 preliminary excavations were aimed at determining whether the kiln was intact. We were successful in finding an intact kiln floor and waster pile. Artifacts, including partially reconstructed vessels from private collections, were examined and many are illustrated.This is a preliminary report on on-going work.
